Who's taking so much CPUs on Firefox!?

So Firefox always takes too much CPUs recently, just tried to figure out which pages really is heavier. and most suspicious pages was Google product... which I keep alive on any tabs usually.

For a way to measure that, just picked CPU load for a process up from top(1) command per 1 second within 1 minute randomly. and average it. Please note that there aren't actually any purposes nor solutions for this topic in this article. but this would be helpful to think about how to cool my laptop down to avoid a fan error as long as possible next time. because there seems to be an exhaust heat issue here.

Well, I didn't do any operations during measuring this and may need more sampling in some cases so that it might relates to how often reloading in the background happens. to be fair, it's the fact that Gmail takes a lot of CPUs though.

Google bookmark feature on Google Toolbar doesn't work

I'm facing this issue since Firefox 3 and Google Toolbar for that has been released. when logging in with my Google account or clicking a star on the toolbar, I see an error message on the error console. that says,

Cc['@google.com/toolbar/bookmark-wrapper;1'] is undefined

I don't know what happened, What I can tell is this feature worked on Firefox 2. so trying to google it and amazingly there are so many people who is facing the same problem and there are a lot of false alarm about its solution, at least with Firefox 3 or on Fedora 9.

Apparently it's not. the latest Google Toolbar doesn't even require libstdc++.so.5. but surely libstdc++.so.6.

So this wouldn't help at all.

That didn't even help me, unfortunately.

So I have given up to investigate this issue and just installed GBookmarks add-on. I'm happy with it now.

[Update: 2008-07-22] Google toolbar 3.1.20080605L works fine on Debian sid, but Iceweasel 3.0.1. I'm missing something or something went wrong. I'd believe Firefox and Iceweasel doesn't make so much difference. anyway Google toolbar doesn't work yet on Fedora 9.
[Update: 2009-09-24] I have to update to not let people get confused... Once updating to Google toolbar 5.0.20090823L (I'm not sure which version exactly fix this since but anyway), this feature works fine again on even Firefox 3.5.

Firefox/Iceweasel taking a lot of CPU power (cont.)

とりあえず結論から。あまりに在り来りでアレなんだけど、CPUを食い散らかしてたのはflash pluginでした。9.0.115.0が入ってたんだけど、あたらしいのが出てたから9.0.124.0にしてみるもダメっぽい。一度該当ページを閉じると大人しくなるので、しばらくは運用でカバーしよう。詳しく調べる時間もないし。

一度2.0.0.14に戻したのだけど、再び3.0b5を入れてみた。前回はフリーズしまくりで話にならなかったんだけど、今回はDisk I/OでCPUに負荷がかかりまくりな状態になった。swapは問題ないからとりあえずProfileの下を除いてみたら、更新されまくって肥大化してるurlclassifier3.sqliteというファイルが…。正直sqliteのパフォーマンスは当てにできないというかDBが小さいうちは手軽でいいんだけど、大きくなってくると使い物にならないぐらいひどい状態になるのを昔経験してるので、あまりいい印象はないんだけど、よりによってなんでsqliteを…。

とりあえず上記のファイル名でぐぐってみると、先頭にこの問題そのものがでてきた。すばらしい。

Committing to urlclassifier3.sqlite causes excessive CPU usage and disk I/O

ここにworkaroundが記されていて、Preferences->SecurityからTell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected atack siteとTell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgeryのふたつのチェックボックスからチェックを外して、Firefox/Iceweaselを終了後にurlclassifier?.sqliteのファイルを削除して起動させる、というもの。たしかにDisk I/Oも頻々に発生しないし、CPUも食いまくりという状況は脱した気がする。気のせいだった。まだ何かがCPUを食い散らかしている。

iceweasel is too unstable...

add-ons入れて再起動ボタンを押すと戻ってこない(i.e. SEGV起こしてる)とか、最後のウィンドウを閉じると、正常終了せずにクラッシュするとか、空のtooltipsがでるとか、いろいろ問題の多かったiceweaselだけれど、add-onsを無効にしまくったら、問題が起きなくなった。しらみつぶしに調べてみると、tooltipsの問題はNo Scriptを無効にすると消えることが判明。そんなまさかと、新しくprofileを作ってNo Scriptをインストールしてみても問題なし。profileがぼっ壊れてると判断して、引越しを決断した。

全く同じ構成とはいかないけど、似たような構成にしてみて上記の問題が一切起きないことを確認。passwordなんかはPassword Exporterを使った。今のところ快適なり。

Gmailでラベルリストを完全に表示させる方法

左側にあるラベルリスト。ラベルが長すぎて隠れてしまって、もはや何のラベルかも分からない。あまりに使いづらいのでGreasemonkeyで遊びがてら、スクリプトを書いてみた。ここからどうぞ。

問題点

• カーソル表示ありだと、サイズ変更のあとレイアウトが変わると、カーソルが正しい位置を指さない
• なぜかイベントが補足できず、結果折り畳んでもサイズ変更ができない(reloadが必要の意)
  

フォントサイズが小さくなった

FC6 からF7へアップグレードした後Firefoxのあらゆるフォントが小さくなった。gnome-font-propertiesとかでDPIの設定をいじ るとたしかにFirefox上でも変化するんだけど、当然ながら他のGNOMEアプリも影響するため、Firefoxで丁度よいサイズになると他の GNOMEアプリ上ではでかすぎて話にならない。

解決策としては、about:configを開きlayout.css.dpiに0(初期値は-1)を設定し、再起動すると以前のサイズに戻った。

URLの補完

URLを入力するときにctrl+enterでwww. + .com、shift+enterでwww. + .net、ctrl+shift+enterでwww. + .orgを補完してくれるらしい。

他にはctrl+Lでロケーションバーに移動とか、ロケーションバーにフォーカスがある状態で、ctrl+UでURL削除とか。その他のEmacs keybindings。
